Internal Family Systems (IFS / Parts Work)

Internal Family Systems (IFS), also known as "Parts Work," is a powerfully transformative, evidence-based psychotherapy model. It proposes that the mind is naturally multiple and that this is a good thing.

How IFS Works

Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS posits that our inner world consists of various "parts"—sub-personalities that have their own perspectives, feelings, and memories. Some parts protect us from pain, while others hold onto past trauma (often called "exiles"). Central to IFS is the concept of the true Self, which is compassionate, curious, and calm. Therapy focuses on helping the Self connect with and heal the inner parts, fostering harmony and reducing internal conflict without relying on suppression or control.

Who Can Benefit?

IFS is highly effective because it treats all "parts" of the individual with respect and curiosity, rather than trying to eliminate them. It is particularly beneficial for treating:

  • Complex Trauma and PTSD
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Eating Disorders and Body Image Issues
  • Relationship difficulties and codependency
  • Chronic self-criticism or perfectionism
